June 30: Bob Dylan & Eric Clapton – Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, NYC 1999

Bob Dylan & Eric Clapton 1999

It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don’t matter, anyhow
An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don’t know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I’ll be gone
You’re the reason I’m trav’lin’ on
Don’t think twice, it’s all right

Great video & nice performance.

Madison Square Garden
New York City, New York
30 June 1999
Eric Clapton & Friends To Benefit Crossroads Centre Antigua

Musicians:

  • Bob Dylan (vocal & guitar)
  • Eric Clapton (guitar)
  • Andy Fairweather Low (guitar)
  • Nathan East (bass)
  • Tim Carmon (keyboards)
  • Steve Gadd (drums)

It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An’ it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
I’m on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin’ anyway
So don’t think twice, it’s all right

It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
I can’t hear you anymore
I’m a-thinkin’ and a-wond’rin’ all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

I’m walkin’ down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

  1. Fascinating how Bob Dylan can put politics to the side, many musicians will have nothing to do with Eric Clapton because of his extreme right wing views and racism.

“Eric Clapton, following Enoch Powell’s “Rivers Of Blood” speech, at a 1976 gig in Birmingham: “Vote for Enoch Powell… I think Enoch’s right, I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white.” – thus single-handedly sparking the Rock Against Racism campaign. Clapton – who’s made a career of playing blues music – has never detracted the comments…”

  2. Hej Egil

    Greetings from N.E. Romania.

I’m wondering if you could do a short piece on Nathan East who does such a terrific job on the Dylan-Clapton collaborations — and always seems to be enjoying himself hugely. He does have his own website which tells you a little bit more about him.

I really enjoy your regular posts. Talk about a labour of love!

    Farvel for nu

  3. Egil, I can’t thank you enough for this one, but I’ve got one issue with you. It’s 11:40 p.m. and I have to be up in six hours. How am I supposed to sleep when I MUST listen to this three or four more times and still surf more through this awesome site? I’m compelled to do both tonight. Can’t Wait.

    1. I can’t wait, wait for you to change your mind
It’s late, I’m trying to walk the line
Well, it’s way past midnight and there are people all around
Some on their way up, some on their way down
The air burns and I’m trying to think straight
And I don’t know how much longer I can wait

      😉

  4. good performance! Bobs in much better shape vocally then when he appeared at his 30 th anniversary show

  5. Great video Egil, thanks much. When I saw the link on Expecting Rain I thought this was from The 30th Anniversary show. Then I remembered Eric did that with the Bobfest Band but Bob wasn’t playing on it.

It seemed as though they were all really enjoying themselves, and for a great cause, Crossroads in Antigua.

Of course that sweet, crisp tone of Eric is always welcome.

A great way to start my day.
