The Best songs: Paint it Black – The Rolling Stones

One of the best and darkest rock songs ever recorded!

Paint It, Black”  by The Rolling Stones was released on 13th of May 1966 (the day after I was born, coincidence, I think not…) as the first single from their fourth album Aftermath (or not, read a bit more about this under).

From Ready Steady Go:

The song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Brian Jones contributed to the song’s signature sitar riff.

The single reached number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom charts in 1966. In 2004 it was ranked number 174 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In the US and UK, it was the first number one single to feature a sitar on the recording.

The original British version of Aftermath was issued in April 1966 as a fourteen-track LP. Issued between the non-LP single releases of “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “Paint It, Black”.

Another Tv-show version, lesser quality footage but great version of the song!

Lastly a version without Brian, and with an extended (“spanish guitar”) intro by Keith:

Lyrics:
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black

With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens evry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black

I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then Ill fade away and not have to face the facts
Its not easy facin up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,…
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!
